Community Partner Project: How to Report a Hate Crime

Community Partner Project: How to Report a Hate Crime

WHO: 18 Coffees Community Partner volunteers with a background in strategy, non-profit management, messaging development, fundraising, and/or political organizing

WHAT: We’re helping How to Report a Hate Crime — a grassroots organization producing web content and physical booklets that contain resources for reporting hate crimes in multiple languages — prepare to scale fundraising efforts ahead of 2023.

How to Report a Hate Crime resources are currently available online in English, Albanian, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalong, Thai, and Vietnamese. However, there is a growing demand for physical booklets in multiple American metros. Founder Esther Lim is in search of additional funding in order to print and distribute more booklets across the United States.

Our collaboration will consist of two phases. You can opt to join us for both phases, or you can pick one that best fits your schedule.

  • Phase One: 2-6 hours as you’re available over the course of a few weeks

    • Over the course of 4 weeks, 18 Coffees Community Partners will collaborate on a turnkey sponsorship deck containing brief explainers, organization milestones, top reasons to donate, printing costs, and clear steps on how to contribute to Hate Crime Book.

  • Phase Two: One hour

    • A virtual brainstorming session helping founder Esther Young Lim generate ideas for fundraising, organizational development, and social strategy.

WHEN: October - November 2022

  • Phase One volunteers will meet for a kickoff meeting the week of 10/24. We’ll then work asynchronously with bi-weekly meetings (exact time TBD).

  • Phase Two volunteers will attend a one-time, one-hour brainstorm in mid-November (exact time TBD).

WHERE: Zoom + Slack + Google Drive

WHY: When Covid-19 was classified as a pandemic, Esther Young Lim witnessed blatant Anti-Asian racism towards the AAPI community. Esther founded How to Report a Hate Crime and created visual booklets in multiple languages that train communities on how to recognize & report hate crimes. Two years later, Esther has enlisted 18 Coffees to help her prepare to fundraise, expand to new markets, and get these essential resources into the hands of those who need them most.

Since her start in 2020, Esther's work with How to Report a Hate Crime represents the impact one person can make — in the two years since its start, How to Report a Hate Crime has been featured on Nightline, GMA, and USA Today. Resources are available in 13 languages, and Esther has distributed over 102,500 booklets, all as a core team of one with limited support.
