Tackling Energy Management with Elisa Haggarty

A wall covered in greenery and a pink neon sign that says "and breathe."

You’ve heard of time management — financial management, too. But energy management?

Energy is one of our greatest resources, yet we rarely give it much intentional thought. Conscious leadership coach and 18 Coffees Community Partner Elisa Haggarty recently hosted a workshop on Energy Management to help us change that, sharing some new tools and great reminders to help harness our energy and feel better about our presence. Here are some of her top tips:

Reflect

It’s helpful to pinpoint patterns and reactions. When, where, and around whom do you need to manage your energy? What do your physiological reactions look and feel like when you’re reacting to stressors? Consistently asking questions like these can help you identify the moments when you need to focus on energy management and make a change.

Move

Our jobs are often sedentary, especially when working from home and eliminating the need for any commute. But movement plays a key role in our energy levels. The next time you’re feeling a bit depleted, get up from your current position and walk around to get your blood flowing again. We can personally vouch for the results — we kicked our workshop off with a two-minute jam session. We left our desks, moved around, sang along to this bop, and felt much more alert as a result.

Breathe

It’s easy to spiral into a low-energy state and stay there, but tools like breath work can help us make our way out. Take a beat to ground yourself through some box breathing — breathe in for four counts, hold for four, release for four, and hold for four before repeating the process. This intentional breathing helps activate the body and regulate our energy levels. In need of a bit more? Quick, repeated breaths where you inhale for three seconds but only exhale for one generates even more blood flow and, ultimately, energy.
